Minority Rights Group (MRG) is seeking to recruit two tutors for our online course for journalists and journalism students on international development, migration, minority and indigenous rights.

The tutors must have a strong background and demonstrated experience in journalism, preferably on foreign policy and international relations, with highly developed skills in communication, excellent writing and liaison and analytical skills; and ability to teach and supervise others. They will have a strong understanding of international development, migration (in particular the EU policy framework towards both issues of international development and migration) human rights and the challenges journalist face with while reporting on such issues. In particular tutors. The tutors shall each be responsible for overseeing course delivery, student support, assessment, feedback and report on approx. 20-24 students’ progress per course to MRG.

These positions are consultancies. Fee: 2500 EUR per course

These are potential long term consultancies; we seek two tutors to work in parallel for five courses run across 2018-2020 (tentatively autumn 2018, spring and autumn 2019, spring and summer 2020). It is estimated that the work will consist of approximately 10 –hours a week, each course would last approx 8 weeks a year. The first course starts at the end of September 2018.

Please note, that although we are looking to sustain long term relationships with tutors, contracts will be renewed on a course by course basis. This means the initial contract will be offered for the first course only and will include a renewal clause, which can be mutually activated.

Job Summary

Tutors will oversee the work of journalists and journalism students from the following countries: Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, who will be undertaking an online course designed as part of MRGs new ‘Media, Minorities and Migration’ program, ( http://minorityrights.org/what-we-do/europeminorities-migration-media ). In line with the programs aims, the tutor is expected to have a deep understanding of international development and be able to will be expected to guide participants on both participatory and sensitive approaches to reporting on issues related to migrant, minorities and indigenous peoples

Tutors work one-on-one with individuals online either through chat via Skype or similar internet technology, grading assignments that are submitted. The interaction is to be for approximately 30

minutes per student, every fortnight. Tutors will use the provided curriculum materials.

Position Requirements:

  • 3-5 years experience in journalism as journalist, editor or freelancer or at least 5 years experience working with journalists as expert, trainer or researcher
  • Knowledge of ethical journalism and standards of reporting on vulnerable communities;
  • Experience in reporting on international development issues, migration and human rights
  • Good level of understanding of media challenges of reporting on international development issues
  • Must be highly computer literate;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Online teaching experience, or similar experience is desirable;
  • Patience in working with trainees with different learning capabilities as well as appreciation for adult learning challenges;
  • Written and oral fluency in both English, with expertise in technical international development terms in English;
  • Responsible, dependable, and organized;
  • Human rights training background and specifically in minority rights and/or freedom of religion an asset;
  • Knowledge of an understanding of EU development and migration policy frameworks would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience of media environments in target countries would be an asset.
  • Available to serve as a tutor throughout the duration of the course (see above for details of expected hours). Applicants who work full-time elsewhere may be asked in interview about how they can manage this role in addition to their other commitments;

A good e-tutor must be able to develop online relationship with the trainees. They also must:

  • Be able to build rapport, generate enthusiasm, maintain interest and help work through a variety of issues
  • Be proactive assisting learners get going on the course, recognize when action needs to be taken and take it.
  • Fix problems before they arise, always be one step ahead, providing what the trainee will need next
  • Understand the needs of each learner
  • Be confident and understand how on-line learning works
  • Be empathetic to the learner and give honest and constructive feedback
  • Have a strong desire to improve the knowledge of trainees on ethical journalism and
  • international development issues
  • Have sensitivity to cultural differences
  • Understand challenges of journalism as a profession especially in the EU New Member States

Responsibilities

The Tutor will work directly with course participants over the internet to provide assistance with module

assignments and assessments. Responsibilities will include:

1. Review, coach and grade participants’ work via e-mail, internet chat or Skype

  • There should be 4 one-to-one discussion between tutor and participants during the 8-week course
  • The tutor will be responsible sending one introduction to the week assignments e-mail and the summary of the week activities e-mail every week to participants for 8 weeks
  • The tutor will also facilitate discussion among participants through chat and motivate exchange among participants
  • The tutor should also suggest and recommend topics for regular ‘guest’ webinars for students, which will be arranged by MRG.
  • Assignments will be submitted to the course tutor each week by email
  • The tutor will review them and will give written feedback. Alternatively, they will then either speak to the participant on Skype or phone or will exchange emails with the participant to give them feedback.
  • The tutor will provide feedback on participant performance and make recommendations to MRG colleagues responsible for selecting those participants who will be invited to undertake field visits with MRG staff to minority communities in Africa and migrant communities in Europe, for the purpose of generating stories.

2. Communicate and report to MRG Coordinator

  • Notify the participants directly and respective MRG Coordinator if you are unable to be present during your scheduled hours
  • Communicate any needs or concerns to the MRG Coordinator in a timely and appropriate fashion
  • Keep proper records and turn them in to MRG
  • Send feedback to the respective Coordinator on progress with your participants

3. Facilitate development of learning skills and concepts.

  • Assist participant in solving problems, without doing their work for them.
  • Provide guidance and encouragement, and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Answer specific questions about the material presented and ask questions.
  •  Encourage good study habits.
  • Hold individual and small group tutoring sessions.
  • Tutor in more than one content area on a regular basis according to the schedule.
  • Available for tutoring preferably more according to trainees’ needs.

Work Environment

Successful applicants can work from home, no work space will be provided by MRG.

Successful applicants will need a computer and access to the internet (high speed and reliable internet).

MRG roles and responsibilities

MRG will ensure that:

1. Tutors and participants are trained in the use of the equipment, facilities, and communication and information systems

2. There is a system for reviewing the quality procedures used and ensuring that all changes are effectively communicated

3. There are clear routines and systems for quality assurance

4. Assessment information (including learning outcomes, assessment criteria as well as assessment

procedures and dates) is provided in the course, modules or topics, and assessment exemplars are made

available to platform tutors and participants

5. Records are kept so that participants can receive detailed and accurate feedback on their

progress/performance

6. MRG will provide information about participants
