Kenya Advocacy Officer

MRG is now looking to recruit a Kenya Advocacy Officer.

This is a part-time post, 2.5 days per week, starting in January 2018 for 12 months (with possibility of extension). This post is based in Nairobi/ Nakuru, Kenya.

Salary: Grade C (1600 EUR pcm pro rated to 800 EUR pcm)

The main purpose of the job is to help MRG achieve its mission to realise the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples round the world, through the use of litigation, legal empowerment, legal tools and other advocacy. Specifically, the post-holder will work with local partners, lawyers, international partners and other local and national stakeholders to develop and then lead on a cohesive and effective national advocacy plan to see the implementation of successful legal decisions and judgments in Kenya in which MRG is involved.

Essential skills and qualifications required for this role:
– An undergraduate and/or postgraduate qualification in law at degree level
– At least 3 years’ experience of advocacy and lobbying work in Kenya and a national context
– experience of working closely with small or emerging CSOs
– 1 year’s experience of managing project activities including budgets
– Detailed knowledge of international human rights and minority rights law including economic and social rights, collective and individual rights, standards relating to minority communities and indigenous peoples
– Detailed knowledge of Kenya’s national legal system and political processes
– Good knowledge of the situation of minority and indigenous communities in Kenya

In addition to that, good communication skills including good written and spoken English and Kiswahili are essential, as well as an ability to draft high quality persuasive and authoritative advocacy submissions and correspondence.
