Death of Professor Katama Mkangi

Minority Rights Group International (MRG) is deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic death of Professor Katama Mkangi in a road accident in Kenya.

The staff of MRG wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Professor Mkangi, and our heartfelt sympathy at this difficult and tragic time. Our thoughts go out especially to his wife and children, who MRG hope will take strength from the legacy of his work to promote and protect human rights and good governance in Kenya.

The untimely death of Professor Mkangi will be greatly felt by those working in the field of human and minority rights, and by MRG especially, since it has been working closely with him and the Centre for Minority Rights Development (CEMIRIDE) to publish a report on minorities and indigenous peoples of Kenya in 2004. This study is due for publication at a time of change and potential opportunity for minorities and indigenous peoples of Kenya, offered by initiatives such as the Land Reform and Constitution of Kenya Review Processes. Professor Mkangi was working hard to grasp and develop this opportunity and MRG hopes that the future completion of this report, and its contribution to positive change, will be a further testament to his work and tribute to his memory. He will be greatly missed.
