UN Special Rapporteur placed under house arrest in Pakistan

9 November 2007

Dr Asma Jahangir, UN Special Rapporteur on the Freedom of Religion or Belief, and former MRG Council member, has been placed under house arrest for 90 days by forces loyal to President Musharraf in Pakistan.

MRG's Executive Director, Mark Lattimer, said, "As a former MRG Council Member we are deeply concerned that the respected human rights defender Asma Jahangir has been placed under house arrest. Dr Jahangir has worked tirelessly for human rights in Pakistan and for religious minorities around the world. It is unacceptable that her freedom should be curtailed in this fashion."
