MRG condemns attack on Bangladeshi indigenous activist
Minority Rights Group International on Tuesday condemned the brutal attack on Sanjeeb Drong, a Bangladeshi indigenous activist and general secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum.
MRG calls on the Bangladeshi government to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation into the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Mr. Drong, who is a prominent human rights activist in the country, was severely beaten up by a gang of men on 22 January 2009, in the Netrokona district in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh's ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples often face such incidents of violence, mainly over land issues. MRG's research shows that few such investigations are properly investigated by police, and perpetrators of violence against minority groups enjoy a climate of impunity in the country.
