Supporting Peace and Reconciliation in Thailand’s Southern Border Provinces

31 October 2016

The situation facing communities in Thailand’s Southern Border Provinces (SBP) has often been called ‘restive’ and ‘intractable,’ but for those working to remedy injustices and human rights violations, peace, justice and reconciliation are possible and within reach. In order to achieve these goals, Minority Rights Group International (MRG) and the People’s Empowerment Foundation (PEF) are supporting local initiatives in the area of peace and reconciliation, including community peace building, civil society support to the ongoing peace negotiations, interfaith dialogue and trust building, promoting multiculturalism and local culture through the arts, and local media initiatives.

‘This is a really excellent opportunity for civil society organisations to receive support for local projects,’ said Nicole Girard, MRG’s Southeast Asia Project Coordinator. ‘It is a chance for them to strengthen their organisations in order to rise to upcoming challenges and have real impact.’

Projects have been selected as part of a European Union European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights funded programme Empowering Thai CSOs representing marginalized communities in the Southern Border Provinces, carried out by MRG and PEF, with total funding worth 684,000 EUR or 26, 747, 918 THB. The objective of the programme is to not only support activities that work toward local level peace initiatives, but also to increase the capacity of local organisations to run these activities, both now and in the future.

Projects will run between August 2016 and December 2017.
