EVENT: Statelessness, watercolours & ink – Zahra Marwan – An MRG Sofa Talk
Zahra Marwan is the winner of last year’s UN International Art Contest: Minority Artists Working on Statelessness Themes. She was born to a Kuwaiti mother and a stateless father and she identifies as a member of the Ayam minority in Kuwait.
Working as a traditional artist with watercolour and ink, Zahra creates work that reflects her cultural roots in Kuwait as well as her life now in Albuquerque, New Mexico (United States of America).
She loves poetry and independent cinema and how quiet and mysterious the night is. She is deeply fond of the sea. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico in Languages and Literature, with a minor in Flamenco Dance and History as well as a minor in Philosophy. She has loved working with museums, non-profits, theatre companies and cultural centres and has found making picture books to be dreamier than she had dreamed them to be!
Her debut picture book ‘Where Butterflies Fill the Sky’ was published by Bloomsbury Books in 2022 and named one of the New York Times / New York Public Library Best Illustrated books as well as NPR’s Best Books of 2022.
We will meet on our virtual sofa for a conversation between Zahra Marwan and Anna Alboth, our Europe Media Officer, in our Sofa Talk series. Every time, we try to introduce you to a special woman from a minority or indigenous background. Check out our Facebook page’s videos to see whom we talked to in the past!
Make sure you tune in and hear Zahra and Anna talk about art and books, minorities and statelessness, and share your favourite quotes using the hashtag #MRGSofaTalk. You can also submit your questions in advance by email at events@minorityrights.org.
When? 28 February 2023, 10-11 am (New Mexico), 5-6 pm (London), 6-7 pm (Berlin)
