UN Committee reviews Mauritania’s compliance with civil and political rights – MRG, ASI and SOS Esclaves’ Submission

Advocacy Statement |

Mauritania will see its laws, policies and state practices reviewed by the UN Human Rights Committee at its 126th session, in July 2019, to assess their conformity with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, that the country has ratified in 2004.

Ahead of this review, Minority Rights Group International (MRG), Anti-Slavery International (ASI) and SOS Esclaves, our partner in Mauritania, have submitted jointly an alternative report focussing on the situation of Haratines and of Black Africans in Mauritania, including on the continued failure of the Mauritanian state to prevent and punish persisting practices of slavery.

The full report can be accessed here.
