Around 1300 euro / month (dependant on location)

Location: Based in the north Africa region. Location must have low risks of interference or interruptions, good internet access and good travel connections to programme countries. Post holder must be able to travel to Egypt on work related visits without hindrance.

Duration: Probably 4 days a week until December 2026.

A:   Purpose of the job

The purpose of the job is to help Minority Rights Group (MRG) achieve its aims and objectives through the implementation of a programme to contribute to securing the human rights of religious, ethnic and gender minorities in Egypt. The post holder will be responsible for coordinating programme activities such as granting, capacity building and advocacy. They will also contribute to MRG’s core principles and strategy and may also help develop new programmes in Egypt as well as more generally in the MENA region.

B: Main duties and responsibilities

Staff: Allocate tasks to the Project Assistant. Also, with the support of Egypt project team, manage the online tutor, trainers, consultants, and authors contributing to the programme activities. 

Planning: Develops and implements plans to deliver MRG’s Egypt programmes, within the objectives set by the Project Coordinators and Head of MENA, including the diaspora component. Contributes to the development and design of new programmes for additional work in the region.

Programme Activity: Delivers work under MRG’s Egypt programmes. As the key member of staff working on this programme, the Officer will be responsible for the concrete delivery of the following but will have support in terms of strategy, decision making, quality control and partner relationships with support of Programme Coordinators.

  • Developing contacts among relevant human and minority rights CSOs and activists. Develop and maintain good working relationships with partners to meet programme objectives.
  • Build and maintain networks with international and local NGOs and other stakeholders working in fields relevant to minority rights in Egypt.
  • Contributing to the design and implementation of trainings including face to face and more complex online course.
  • Lead on the sub-granting activities, including liaising with partners, drafting contracts, overseeing the implementation of small grants and processing partner reports by checking all materials that are submitted.
  • Review partners financial reports with the support of the project assistant and other team members and liaising with MRG’s Finance team to check budgets and activities.
  • Drafting calls for proposals or other secure means of attracting project ideas. Selecting recipients of small grants and advising them during implementation.
  • Supporting partners to: build and develop a monitoring network, carry out advocacy activities; produce materials; and do research to educate and inform and challenge prejudice.
  • Ensuring vulnerable groups inclusivity across the project activities and gender balance.
  • Managing security risks linked to programme activities and project relationships.
  • Maintains an awareness of MRG’s security guidelines, including those on digital security and data protection, and follows these when carrying out the work, as well as any other precautions as determined by line manager. Reports any information that signals a change in the risk profile of MRG’s activities to a relevant manager.
  • maintaining confidentiality by following such digital security and data protection guidelines as determined by MRG.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with partners to meet programme objectives.
  • Disseminate results of work carried out under the programme, as well as MRG research and experience on minorities generally, including the development and maintenance of a database of relevant contacts. 
  • Monitor and evaluate the outcomes and impacts of programmes including ensuring that mechanisms to gather all necessary data are in place.
  • Advise other MRG staff on the situation of minorities and human rights more broadly in Egypt.


Financial

  • Monitor spending and resolve any variances or budget issues on areas of budget delegate.
  • Financial record-keeping and – in liaison with the programme coordinators and Finance Department – processing payments as required, including making transfers and reimbursements to partners.


General: Undertakes such other tasks as may reasonably be requested by the Head of MENA and Programmes Coordinator from time to time. Attend staff and departmental meetings. Contributes to the evaluation of MRG activities and publications. Covers for absent staff on related work as necessary.    

Confidential information: Responsible for maintaining confidentiality as the job holder will be entitled to a very high level of access to confidential information pertaining to MRG’s strategies, detailed financial information, and also access to sensitive external information which may impact on MRG’s activities.   

Degree of supervision: The job holder will be expected to report to the Programme Coordinator, any variation from agreed plans and schedules, and to report regularly on the programme and projects’ progress.

Working conditions: The job holder will be working remotely. The job will involve some travel, essential to the implementation of the programme’s activities; this will be approximately 1-2 weeks per year, where the management team deems it safe to do so. The job holder is required to maintain the pace of work which may at times be high and will need to manage several tasks simultaneously.

C. Person specification

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • University degree in relevant area such as human rights, political science, international relations, or social science
  • At least two years’ experience of and familiarity with civil society in Egypt, preferably including a diaspora organisation.
  • Proven experience of and familiarity with Egyptian human rights organisations and activists in the diaspora focusing on religious, ethnic or gender minority issues.
  • Experience working with grassroots organisations.
  • Experience working in human rights field, preferably on the rights of minorities and indigenous people.
  • The ability to draft reports and statements.
  • Fluent in English and Arabic.
  • Experience organizing events and meetings.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, including experience with prioritizing tasks. 
  • Ability to manage security risks linked to programme activities and project relationships
  • Has the ability to maintain confidentiality, follow guidance on digital security and data protection.
  • Interpersonal skills, the ability to maintain good working relations with partners.
  • An excellent team player
