The Adivasis of Bangladesh
Reports |
Ownership and access to land is an issue of immense importance to tribal and indigenous peoples everywhere. Some indigenous land rights are customary ones, dating back to ‘time immemorial’, some were formalized under colonial rule. Other rights have been lost, disregarded by governments or ignored by the majority community, while tribal lands are often stolen by individual settlers, by government agencies and by pubhc and private companies. The Adivasi – the preferred generic name of the tribal peoples – of Bangladesh are today fighting to retain their already tenuous rights to land.
