Regional Conflict Prevention & Peace Building Coordinator

Location: Africa Regional Office, Kampala, Uganda

Remuneration: 37,355,088 UGX gross per annum (3,112,924 per month)


Eastern and Central Africa countries have for decades been challenged by identity Conflicts. Rich in ethnicity diversity, the conflict landscape has intensified due to land grabs, competition for scarce resources, organized crime, tensions between authoritarian regimes & the demand for political participation, & poorly conceptualized interventions. Conflicts between pastoralist communities; pastoralist & agriculturalist communities; traditional authorities & farmers/ humanitarian agencies; refugees & settled populations/ local authorities, cattle rustling, small arms proliferation, inadequate institutional accountability & policy frameworks, poor land tenure policy, weakened traditional governance, & continuing political and economic marginalization of pastoralists, exacerbated by climate-induced changes among other factors.

Minority Rights Group International is the leading international human rights organization working to secure rights for ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities and indigenous people around the world.

Minority rights group International is implementing a project on ‘Networks for Peace: Preventing and Resolving Conflicts through Early Warning Mechanisms in Africa’ in Partnership with Kabarole Research and Resource Centre (Uganda), Community Development and Resource Network (Uganda) Isiolo Gender Watch (Kenya), Mbororo Social and Cultural Development Association (Cameroon). We are seeking to strengthen Early Warning Mechanisms (EWMs) as a sustainable way to prevent identity conflicts. We seek to empower the local ethnic minority and indigenous peoples as peace activists to mobilise, train and support their communities to feed into and use EWMs; mobilise institutional responses; Network, share knowledge and raise awareness on identity conflicts and most important seek to reduce or eliminate identity conflicts in the long-term.

MRG is now looking to recruit a Regional Conflict Prevention & Peace Building Coordinator. We are looking for a person with experience on conflict prevention and peace building and preferably with hands on experience in implementing an early warning mechanism.

Key duties and responsibilities: Reporting to the Africa Regional Manager, the Coordinator is to initiate, create and implement all the project’s CSOs & MRGA related activities. In addition, the incumbent will be involved in networking all the project partners to ensure coordinated sharing of experience, challenges and opportunities and will liaise with staff of other projects to secure cross projects’ complementarity.
