Violence could mar Iraqi elections – minorities express concern

Fears of violent attacks and the failure to register large numbers of minorities on voter lists could seriously jeopardise the conducting of free and fair provincial elections in Iraq on January 31st, minority activists in Iraq warn.

The elections are considered crucial towards establishing democracy in Iraq but violence against minority populations could prevent many of them from casting their votes. Thousands of displaced minorities have also been left out of voter registries in the areas they originate from and therefore are unable to vote.
