Hopes for 2022: ‘Where’s our solidarity with refugees? We can do better’

In this video produced by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Claire Thomas, Deputy Director for Minority Rights Group International and a founding member of the IDS-led Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID), reflects on how easily solidarity crumbles in the face of adversity. We often put ourselves first when we feel afraid, though equally many have stepped up their support for their communities – health professionals, volunteers and people making generous donations despite falling incomes.

She shares three refugee stories: the experiences of her colleague, Anna Alboth helping refugees stranded on the Poland-Belarus Border, a Somali minority refugee fighting a seven year legal battle to get asylum and Afghan refugees caught in an agonisingly slow bureaucratic quagmire, despite the international community investing years of funds and resources towards on Afghanistan built on democracy and freedom.

Claire believes we are better than this, humanity can do better for the world’s most vulnerable people in 2022.
