Title
Statistician to analyse maternal health data
Reports to
Claire Thomas, Co-Executive Director
Salary
$2000 total
MRG is seeking a person qualified and experienced in extracting data from and reporting on DHS and MICS surveys. This is a short term opportunity for a limited number of days work to support research which will feed into the publication of an updated version of the Indigenous Women’s Maternal Health and Mortality publication.
Tasks
The tasks will focus on extracting data from MICS and DHS concerning indigenous women’s and girls’ access to, take up of, and experience of maternal sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. MRG will supply ways to identify which responses are from indigenous women and girls in each case – often responses to questions about ethnicity but at times potentially using proxies including language and geography.
Tasks will include:
- Extracting and reporting data which was collected but not analysed or reported and thus is only available in the primary DHS and MICS data sets
- Collating the above data with existing reported data to generate a full set of data concerning indigenous women and any disparities between their rates of access to (and where possible experience of) SRH services (and in the course of this advising and determining on statistical significance and ranges of statistically significant data).
- Testing and deploying statistical techniques seeking to control for the possible impacts of poverty, living in remote or rural areas or other similar factors.
- Testing and deploying statistical techniques seeking to establish any correlations between the above and women and girls reports of having experienced discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity (MICS only and only selected surveys) and/or those reporting that they did not access a relevant service because they did not trust the provider.
- Testing and deploying statistical techniques to isolate/compare indigenous peoples in context where they are the majority/can more easily influence decisions to those in contexts where this is not the case.
Size of data set
To give an indication of the work involved, we have a sample of approximately 55 surveys, of which
- 22 include relevant questions and therefore will have data disaggregated by ethnicity which allows identification of indigenous women and girls,
- 22 do not include data which allows this in any direct way and the remainder are still being checked by our expert team.
- Some of the 22 which do not include data directly may still allow for identification by way of proxies.
We will look at a maximum of 6 indicators per survey.
Time and fee
Our preference would be to contract for this service on the basis of a fee for a job and we have a budget of $2,000. The amount of work involved may vary depending on progress as the work moves forward but we do not expect it to exceed 12 days work in total. The successful candidate would not be expected to work full-time but must be able to supply the service between appointment and the end of September, or the end of first week of October and must be able to start at least some work in mid September.
